ESTIMATING SPREADSHEET vs. UNIT-PRICING

WHICH VERSION SHOULD I USE?

We offer two versions of the spreadsheet: the Estimating  & Budgeting Spreadsheet (original version) and the new Unit-Pricing Spreadsheet.

TIPS FOR CHOOSING

  • ESTIMATING & BUDGETING SPREADSHEET: Use this version if most of your work is done by subcontractors who are providing bids. You can break down costs by Labor & Materials or just enter a Total.  View Sample Estimating Spreadsheet.
  • UNIT-PRICING SPREADSHEET: Use this version if you estimate most items by units of work such as square feet, linear feet, cost per window, etc. Enter whatever unit you like. This version provides a more detailed estimate. View Sample Unit-Pricing Spreadsheet.
  • PLEASE NOTE: In the Unit-Pricing version, the default quantity is 1.  So there’s no need to enter a quantity for subcontractor bids,  fees, and other fixed-price items.

The Unit-Pricing Spreadsheet has all the same functions as the original version, plus it allows Quantity Takeoffs. For example, you can input 20 squares of roofing at $300/per square for materials and $200/square for labor. In the original version, you can only enter the total cost of Roofing Shingles. You can break the cost into labor and materials, or simply enter the total installed cost.

The Unit-Pricing Spreadsheet allows any unit for each item. For example, you can use square feet, linear feet, cubic yards, each, per bid,  or whatever you like (or leave it blank).  Next, enter the quantity. If you don’t enter a quantity, the default value is 1.
